The Chelsea boys basketball opened the season on the road Thursday, capturing a 50-35 win over Brookwood to start on a positive note.

Junior guard Paul Lanzi was the top scorer for Chelsea, pouring in 22 points to pace the Hornets (1-0) on offense. Lanzi also had five rebounds. Senior Carson Camper had a solid all-around performance with eight points, seven rebounds, and four steals.

Chelsea coach Nick Baumbaugh was pleased with his upperclassmen, but also made note of a bright spot off the Hornet bench.

“We expected Paul and Carson to lead us, but knew someone else needed to step up,’ Baumbaugh said. “Just a ninth grader, Aiden Owens had a great opening game.”

Owens finished his first high school game with 10 points and eight rebounds in big reserve minutes.

Owens’ contribution was especially needed since the Hornets were without some key team members who were still finishing up football season last Friday.

“Without the football players, our other young guys stepped up and gave us good, quality minutes,” Baumbaugh said.

Chelsea will return to play Tuesday evening when the Hornets hit the road again, this time to take on Clay-Chalkville.
