Boys’ soccer update

Andrew Messier, Reporter

The Chelsea High School boys’ soccer program historically has never had great teams. Very few Hornet teams have ever made deep playoff pushes, but this year may be the change.

Head coach Lee Miller has raved about how skillful this group of boys has been, and how much different they have been from teams in the past, who have had big pieces, but not the whole picture.  Captains Eli Alexander, Nick Craddock and Connor Greene lead this club and have big expectations for the team.

This year the boys have already picked up three wins against a tough McAdory team (6-4), a mediocre Hazel Green team (3-2), and a solid, young John Carroll team (3-2).  The team has also dropped three games.  The first loss came at the season opener in Mountain Brook, the second at the Lakeshore tournament at Sports Blast against a really good Cullman team (who won the 6A championship last year), and the third also at the Lakeshore Tournament against a solid Sparkman team.

All in all, the team has met expectations by going .500 in a solid season so far.  The biggest concern for the team so far has been goalkeeping. Last year’s team had two great goalkeepers, Alex Fetner and Marcus Frederick, who graduated.  This year the team has little experience at all at keeper position.

Coach Miller has mixed up who he has played between junior Cole Glandon and freshman Joseph Gage, both of whom, have barely played soccer before in their lives. Despite the goalkeepers being inexperienced and having to mature, everything else looks solid, especially the defense led by Craddock and Greene.

Chelsea’s upcoming schedule includes tough games against Northridge on February 28 and Spain Park on March 14. Other highlighted games include big area games against Pelham on March 23 and April 11 and against Helena on March 7 and April 14.

Make sure to come out and support your Chelsea Hornets boys’ varsity soccer team. Even if you cannot, you can follow them for live game updates and more from Coach Miller @ChelseaHSSoccer on Twitter.
