Eli Alexander scored the game’s only goal late in the second half to push the home standing Chelsea Hornets boys soccer team past visiting Mountain Brook 1-0 on Wednesday night.

“It felt amazing getting the goal so that we could beat Mountain Brook for the second time in school history,” Alexander said.

The Hornets, who improved to 2-0 with the win, and the Spartans played to a scoreless tie for much of the game thanks to strong defense on both sides. However, late in the game, Chelsea broke through.

The game-winner came when Anthony Nettuno’s shot from the right baseline struck the post and was redirected to fellow freshman Lando Nichols. Nichols then passed it to Alexander, who found the net for the goal and the win.

The Hornets will resume play Friday and Saturday in the Lakeshore Shootout tournament, which will be held at the Sports Blast, just off Highway 280 in Chelsea.

Chelsea is scheduled to compete first against Sparkman at 4 p.m. Friday. Other matches over the weekend will see the Hornets take on Indian Springs, Trinity, and Westminster.
